About Us

Local Action, National Impact

Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. (CDTLI) is a dedicated community group working to conserve and restore the beautiful natural environment of the Townsville region. As part of the broader Australian Landcare movement, we’re passionate about making a difference right here in our local area.

While deeply rooted in the coastal dry tropics of Townsville, CDTLI strives to align with the overarching vision of Landcare Australia: All Australians actively caring for the land and water that sustains us. For over 20 years, we’ve been operating in Townsville, working hard to protect and enhance our natural spaces.

Who We Are: Your Local Landcare in Action

Coastal Dry Tropics Landcare Inc. (CDTLI) is your local urban Landcare group, serving the Townsville region with a commitment to hands-on environmental action. We formed in 2004 through the coming together of two passionate groups: the Townsville Thuringowa Landcare Association and the Tropical Urban Production and Landcare Group.

CDTLI is a grassroots, not-for-profit community organisation, run by a dedicated volunteer Management Committee. We are unique to the Townsville context, but we aim to uphold and promote the same ethos and values as the national Landcare movement. That means focusing on sustainable management of our natural and productive landscapes and building resilient ecosystems and communities for the future.

Our Vision and Mission: Shared Goals

At CDTLI, our local vision is simple: to preserve, protect, and enhance the natural environment of the Townsville coastal dry tropics.

Our mission is to promote and undertake the sustainable management of land and water resources, creating a healthy, biodiverse, and natural environment across the Townsville coastal dry tropics.

These local goals directly support the purpose of Landcare Australia: Empowering individuals and communities and contributing to the sustainable management of natural and productive landscapes. We believe that local action, driven by passionate people, can contribute to a much larger, national movement of environmental stewardship.

What We Do: On the Ground in Townsville

CDTLI is actively involved in a range of projects that make a real difference in the Townsville region:

  • Operating a Native Plant Nursery: Our nursery serves as a community and education hub, providing native plants for revegetation projects and a space for learning and sharing knowledge.
  • Managing Revegetation Sites: We actively manage seven Landcare revegetation sites across diverse ecosystems, including coastal dunes, creeks, and wetlands.
  • Organizing Community Working Bees: We host regular community working bees where volunteers come together for bush regeneration activities.
  • Implementing Weed Control Programs: We implement targeted weed control programs and revegetate degraded areas with native species, helping to increase biodiversity and improve ecosystem health.

All of these activities directly contribute to the environmental protection, enhancement, and conservation of land, water, waterways, and coasts in the Townsville area. We’re proud to be echoing the broader aims of the Landcare movement through our work.

Community Involvement: Everyone Can Contribute

CDTLI is driven by the amazing dedication of our volunteer community. We believe in the power of people coming together to make a positive impact.

We’re an inclusive organisation, encouraging people from all walks of life to volunteer and learn with us. We offer opportunities for volunteers to enhance their skills and knowledge through hands-on, interactive activities in a safe and welcoming space.

This local engagement directly supports the national Landcare focus on empowering individuals and communities, encouraging participation in Landcare activities, and recruiting and retaining volunteers. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting to learn about the environment, we have a place for you.

Our Partners: Collaborating for a Stronger Townsville

CDTLI is proud to partner with other local organisations, including the Townsville City Council (TCC), NQ Dry Tropics, and Conservation Volunteers Australia. We believe that working together is essential for tackling complex environmental challenges.

Landcare is all about bringing together groups of people who share a common problem, and we actively collaborate to address local environmental challenges. We’re grateful for the support of our partners and the strength of our local network.
