About
The Ross River (Mundingburra) Landcare site stretches along Ross River’s edge from Aplins Weir to Sheriff Park. Visitors access it easily from Aplins Weir Rotary Park or the ends of O’Dowd Street, Mango Avenue, Winifred Street, Water Street, or Trot Street.
Local residents launched restoration efforts on several patches of degraded vegetation along the riverbank in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dedicated individuals have sustained this work over the decades.
Current work
The group works mainly between Winifred St and Water St to maintain areas cleared of woody weeds and guinea grass that have been replanted with native species. Depending on needs and volunteer numbers, the group also tackles selected areas between Aplin’s Weir and Trot Street to remove weed regrowth such as Leucaena and new invaders like Ivy gourd and Siam weed.
Over the years, we have to thank many individuals, JCU students, secondary and primary students and community groups who have worked on this bank of Ross River over years to help improve the environment.
You are welcome to come along too!
