Acacia fasciculifera

Scrub Wattle / Scaly Bark

Origin of name

Family: MIMOSACEAE

  • Acacia meaning “a point
  • fasciculifera meaning “bearing bundles

Occurrence

Grows locally in open eucalypt forest, vine thickets and on margins of drier rain forests, especially along stream banks. Not common in the Townsville area.

Tolerates full sun/part-shade, a range of well drained soil types, and some dryness between waterings. Fairly slow-growing, and long-lived.

Appearance

Tall tree (8-20m) with rough bark and dense canopy of dark green, glossy leaves. Globular heads of cream flowers (Nov-Mar) lead to ~12x1cm seed pods.

A good shade/screen tree for larger gardens and parks. Flowers sweetly perfumed. Larger trees provide attractive timber. Considered cyclone strong.
