Origin of name

Family: MIMOSACEAE

  • Acacia meaning “a point
  • hemsleyi in honour of William Botting Hemsley

Occurrence

Grows locally in hot, semi-arid areas, in sandy-gravelly soils, often near creeks and beaches.

Requires full sun and good drainage. Drought hardy and will tolerate long periods of high temperatures to 40°C. Salt tolerant, but doesn’t tolerate frost.

Appearance

A slender tree/shrub with rough bark. Usually grows 2-5m tall with erect stem, spreading branches and loosely textured crown. Flowers (Jul-Sep) are bright yellow spikes.

A good screening plant for areas with sufficient room. Birds and other animals eat the seeds.
