Occurrence
Found in drier areas of mainland Australia, mostly on
floodplains/alluvial flats, but also rocky hillsides & ridges.
Prefers well-drained, light to heavy soils in full sun or part-shade. Tolerant of saline soils. Drought- and frost-tolerant. Has extensive root system, so excellent for windbreaks and soil stabilisation. Lives 10-15 yrs.
Appearance
Evergreen shrub/small tree (2-5m) with prickly branches. Can be multi-stemmed from ground level. Pale yellow, ball flowers (Aug-Oct) are followed by ~8 cm, fawn, smooth, papery pods in summer.
Bush tucker. Commercially, now the main edible-seed wattle – seeds used for roasted hazelnut flavour. Prickly branches shelter small birds and other animals. On the $10 note from 2017 on!
