Occurrence
A local plant of coastal monsoon forest, drier rainforest, and beach forest.
Grows well in dappled shade. Prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Tolerates salt-laden air. Young plants suited to pots/containers/bonsai.
Appearance
Medium tree (usu. 5-10m) with spreading canopy & young growth covered with white & rusty scales. Clusters of small female & male (Oct-Dec, on separate trees) lead to globular fruit (~20mm x 15mm) with 1-2 seeds.
Flowers strongly fragrant. Seeds covered with thin, white, gelatinous flesh that’s sweet & tasty. Fruit eaten by birds, especially Pied Imperial Pigeon. Good shade or shelter tree.
