Cunjevoi / Elephant Ears
CAUTION
The plant is POISONOUS. Sap: irritates the skin and eyes. Eating: causes immediate pain, burning sensation and swelling of lips, tongue and mouth.

Occurrence
Not a local plant – an understorey herb of rainforest in
eastern Australia, but not within 50km of Townsville.
Hardy in moist, well-drained soil in a sheltered site with some shade. Does well in tubs. Responds to mulching.
Appearance
A tall herb (to ~1.5m) with clumps of large, heart-shaped leaves arising from creeping, underground stems. Hood-enclosed spikes of small, fragrant, cream flowers (Jan-Mar) lead to clusters of red berries 8-15mm diam.
Foliage is attractive. Flowers and fruits attract insects and
birds that tolerate the poison (Calcium oxalate).
