Occurrence
Grows in seasonally wet areas or near creeks, in open forest and woodland, in soil types ranging from sand to heavy clay.
A fast-growing plant. Likes sun or light shade and is very
drought-tolerant. Dies back to underground tuber in the dry and re-appears with first rain. Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but has low water use once established. Suitable for large pots.
Appearance
A perennial, trailing herb to 2m diam. Locally, rarely more than knee-high. Leaf shape varies widely. Prolific, usually red flowers (Nov-Apr, with rains) last 1 day and lead to hairy seed pods.
Very attractive flowers. Leaves, shoots and tuber can be eaten raw or cooked.
