Occurrence
A local plant of most rainforest types and wetter beach scrub.
Needs moist, well-drained soil. Prefers light shade, but tolerates full sun & poorer soils. Once established, can tolerate dry periods but would benefit from extra water.
Appearance
Medium tree (~4-10m) with rounded canopy of ‘lacy’ leaves. Clusters of ‘shaving brush’ flowers, with pink-tipped stamens (Sep-Mar) lead to flat, coiled seed pods that ripen to vivid orange, with shiny black seeds.
Spectacular in flower. Fragrant flowers attract many butterflies. Can flower & fruit as a small shrub. Good as container/pot plant & bonsai subject. Caterpillars of the Small Purple Line Blue butterfly eat the leaves. Good specimen tree for average-sized garden.
